Words from the Chair

I visited NOC’s two Learning Centers in downtown Beaufort — Parkview and Marsh Pointe. I saw hope and optimism in the faces of the children who were there. After almost a year, these students are showing significant results in academic performance, attendance, behavior, and parent involvement. While I have been optimistic from the outset, these children are achieving excellent results faster than our expectations. Clearly, the NOC model is working and is highly relevant to creating opportunities for children and families who live in neighborhoods with limited resources and services. The hard work of the NOC team, together with the teachers, volunteers, and friends of NOC, is generating positive payoffs.

Town of Hilton Head to Maintain Cordillo Tennis Courts

During the Hilton Head Island Town Council meeting on April 5, the Council voted 5 to 1 not to sell the Cordillo Tennis Courts to the Home Owners Associations. For the past two years, NOC has opposed this sale, arguing that these courts provide an open-space play area for the 180 children and their families who live in the surrounding apartments. Eight children who are enrolled in NOC’s after school program attended the meeting, and one student made a presentation (see below), imploring Town Council members not to sell the facility. NOC’s position was presented by Ally Cook, NOC Vice Chair and Gary Tauscher, NOC Board Director

NOC Cited as an Effective Model to Overcome Poverty

In a recent opinion article, Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of Economics21 at the Manhattan Institute, noted that “What improves pay is productivity, and better education leads to higher productivity.” She then cited NOC as an effective model for providing the education foundation that ultimately leads to higher productivity.

NOC Urges Town to Convert Tennis Courts to Green Space

NOC and its supporters have taken an active position in urging the Town of Hilton Head to convert the rundown tennis courts located adjacent to the Cordillo Courts Apartments into a recreation green space.
