Cordillo Student of the Week

October 13, 2014 By nocadmin

Student of wk 10-6-14

Juan Leyva Perez has been recognized as a Cordillo Student of the Week. Juan is in the 3rd grade at  Hilton Head IB Elementary School where he is a great student! He always has a smile on his face, and is a joy to have in NOC’s after school program. He is friends with everyone, and he epitomizes the concept of being a caring neighbor. Juan is always willing to take an extra minute to ensure the computers are shut down, and everything is in order before he takes his place in line for snack at the end of the day. During study time, you will find him keeping to himself and working diligently on the task at hand. He sets an excellent example for those around him, and is a pleasure to work with!

Congratulations on being Cordillo Student of the Week, Juan!

An NOC Star

Will White
Will White, an eleventh grader at Heritage Academy, is a wonderful volunteer at NOC’s Cordillo Courts Program Center.  After giving tennis lessons every weekend for the past year for children at the Cordillo Courts tennis courts, Will got involved with NOC during the 2014 summer program.  His favorite part of volunteering with NOC is helping students do worksheets and homework, but he also enjoys helping kindergarteners master basic math and reading skills.
When Will is not in school or at NOC, he plays tennis and is a member of the Hilton Head Island rowing team. He also continues to donate his time every Sunday to teach tennis to the children who live at Cordillo Courts, many of whom are the very same students who attend NOC’s after school program every week. We are glad to have Will as an NOC volunteer, and we appreciate his selfless spirit and continued hard work!

Simmons Cay Reading Squad

October 1, 2014 By nocadmin

Reading group

Since the beginning of 2014, a number of NOC students at the Simmons Cay Program Center have made significant progress in reading, as reflected in standardized test scores.  These students enjoy reading and take great pride in talking about the books that they have read.

As a reward, they were each given a book based on their reading level. Several students remarked that they would like to have easy access to books that they like within their own neighborhood.

Siza Vega, a second grade student at IB Elementary School in Hilton Head, has been recognized as the Cordillo “Student of the Week.” Siza is an extremely hard worker, diligently completing her homework and Compass Learning lesson every single day. Not only does she have perfect attendance, she also arrives early on most days and enjoys helping the Program Manager set up for the day. She is very kind and respectful to her peers as well as to volunteers and teachers. Kindergarten students look forward to having Siza help them get settled into their classroom each day before the program starts.

Siza joins the ranks of the Cordillo “Hall of Fame” this week, and she was excited to receive a backpack full of school supplies as a reward for her outstanding work ethic and attitude.

An NOC Star

September 29, 2014 By nocadmin

Steven is one of the great NOC volunteers serving at Cordillo Courts! He is currently in 7th grade, and attends Hilton Head Middle School. His favorite subject is math, and he greatly enjoys school. Steven previously attended NOC’s program center Stevenin Bluffton, and loved it so much that when he moved to Hilton Head he wanted to come back as a volunteer. He has two younger brothers currently in the program, and together the three of them shine brightly in school, in NOC, and in their community.

When Steven is not in school or volunteering at NOC, he enjoys playing soccer, football, and basketball. The students in NOC look up to Steven, and always want him to be the one to help them with their homework or Compass Learning. He is a valuable member of our team, and we are thrilled to have him serving with us!

Steven is an NOC star!
