NOC Earns Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency

March 22, 2020 By NOC

Guidestar

NOC is pleased to announce that it has received the Guidestar Platinum Seal of Transparency (see link below).

NOC has always placed great importance on integrity, accountability, and transparency in its operations, business transactions, and financial management. NOC has established effective internal controls and checks and balances in its management, operations, and use of funds. From the outset in 2008, NOC has employed the services of external auditors (June Associates CPA) to review its accounts and finances to ensure proper management and use of donors’ money. Moreover, NOC places importance on monitoring the results and impact of its outreach programs and how these programs are making a difference in the lives of the people it serves. NOC ensures that it implements programs that are cost effective and sustainable.

NOC Opens New Program Center at Cordillo Courts

April 18, 2014 By nocadmin

The Neighborhood Outreach Connection has opened a new program center at Cordillo Courts in Hilton  Head’s Photo 1south island area to provide after-school tutoring and access to the Beaufort County School District’s computerized education-reinforcement curriculum to 120 children in the area who are enrolled in the public schools. As with NOC’s other program centers, this after-school program is led by teachers through a partnership agreement with the Beaufort County School District, with assistance from adult and high school volunteers. The after-school program runs from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m.,  Monday through Thursday. While space is limited, students living in Cordillo Courts, Woodhaven, or The Hedges (approx. 300 apartments) are eligible to sign up for the program.

Beginning in September 2014, NOC plans to expand programs at Cordillo Courts to include a pre-school program and adult classes (English language).  In addition, periodic health and vision/hearing screenings will be provided in conjunction with Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Volunteers in Medicine, and the Lions Club.

Volunteers are encouraged to become a part of this valuable service to this underserved community.

Caring Neighbor

December 3, 2013 By nocadmin

image1NOC’s slogan is: “Be a caring neighbor …” Since its inception, NOC has witnessed many examples of caring neighbors within its targeted neighborhoods as well as in other gated and non-gated communities. A great example is Angel … who attends NOC’s English class and is always ready to help. Recently, Angel woke up early, went to his construction job in Bluffton, and later in the afternoon, after a hard day’s work, came to NOC’s Program Center at Oaks, where he help clean the enclosed courtyards in two of the three apartments that NOC uses for its outreach program. It was dreary and muggy outside, a day that might have been spent at a leisurely pace in a cool environment, or even taking a siesta in the afternoon, but Angel worked hard to complete his task in a professional way. As he left, he said that he felt good that he had done something worthwhile to help others in the Oaks complex.

There are many Angels out there who are willing to help in their quiet way without fanfare or publicity. NOC owes these dedicated people a big “thank you”!

NOC’s Centurion Club Visits Sandbox Museum

September 3, 2013 By nocadmin

Several NOC student tutors – Emma Stanton, Katy Hinton, Kristin Trusz, Hannah Brink, and, Keelin Sanz – organized a field trip to the Sandbox Museum for younger members of NOC’s Centurion Club.

The Sandbox is an “interactive” children’s museum that offers many hands-on experiences. The student tutors presented their idea to Roberta Foss, NOC volunteer and Learning Coordinator in HHI. They then approached the management of the museum and worked out a program for the NOC children, including a waiver of the entrance fees. They developed a detailed plan of activities at the museum, including a picnic lunch for the children. Roberta Foss and the student tutors led the group and the Boys and Girls Club provided a bus to transport the children to and from the museum, bringing them back to NOC’s Program Center at Oaks.

The end result was that children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 spent more than three hours at the museum where they had a great time. They participated enthusiastically in several activities, enjoying every moment that they spent there. They acquired new knowledge and enjoyed each other’s company in an environment with which they were not familiar. For many of the children, it was their first visit to the museum. On their return home, they were cheerful and anxious to recount their experiences with parents and friends.
