Dr. Narendra P. Sharma, NOC Founder & Chair, spoke to the Liberal Men’s Group of the Lowcountry on December 11, 2017, on poverty and income inequality from a global, national, and local perspective. In this context and as requested by the group, Dr. Sharma spoke about critical housing issues facing low-income and moderate middle income families in Beaufort County, particularly in Hilton Head Island and Bluffton. He discussed the seriousness of poverty and income inequality and the expanding gulf between the haves and have-nots at the global, national, and local levels. He concluded that unless the have-nots have a fair share of expanding wealth, income, and opportunities to get ahead and enjoy a better quality of life, there will be instability, tension, and conflict. Regarding affordable housing, he made a number of significant recommendations for increasing the supply of affordable housing for low and moderate income families, as well as actions for augmenting their income and improving transportation infrastructure.
