Beaufort County Schools Fall Short

Beaufort County faces an enormous challenge to overcome the significant achievement gap between white students and minorities, as reflected in the recently released state education report card, and reported in the Island Packet (11/29/18).

“A third of Beaufort County public schools are performing below S.C. standards — and two schools are among the bottom 9 percent in the state, according to a new report released Thursday.” Read the full article here: SC Education Report Card

Over the past 10 years, NOC has directed its efforts and resources to help high risk children who carry the burden of poverty excel in school. NOC’s partnership with the Beaufort County School District must be strengthened to help address this problem quickly. To this end, NOC is engaged in discussions with Dr. Herbert Berg and his senior staff to find innovative solutions for dealing with this pressing issue.

According to the Island Packet (October 17, 2018), “Results from two standardized tests South Carolina uses to measure the quality of education in districts across the state show that fewer than half of all third- through eighth-grade students in the Beaufort County School District are proficient in math and English and fewer than half of all fourth-, sixth- and eighth-graders are proficient in science.”

A New Look at Social Mobility and Opportunity Disparity

Just released by the U.S. Census Bureau, the interactive Opportunity Atlas provides access to data that demonstrates how the neighborhood in which a child grows up can have a significant impact on the child’s success and future earning potential. Such analysis goes hand in hand with NOC’s development approach that focuses on helping children living in poverty to excel in school and achieve greater success in the future.

Produced in collaboration with faculty at Harvard University and Brown University, the atlas provides access to data that supports social mobility estimates neighborhood by neighborhood.

NOC’s Cordillo Program: A Special Thanks to Donors, Friends, and Volunteers

On behalf of NOC-Cordillo, we want to express our deepest gratitude to the Sisters of Charity, Long Cove Community Foundation, Wexford Plantation Charitable Foundation, United Way of the Lowcountry, Bargain Box, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and Providence Presbyterian Church for their generous grants, as well as for donations from individuals that have allowed us to offer education and health programs in the Cordillo and Hedges communities. It is an honor to assist the families that are so desperately underserved.

This year has been filled with wonderful achievements that include all aspects of the NOC mission. We have worked hard with the community to maintain the public tennis courts. We have taught the children the importance of maintaining their environment and caring for the Earth. We work with the children daily to pick up trash in the community with the hope they will be good keepers of the Earth. This has trickled down to the parents and older children living in the community. We have seen an improvement in the care of this public space.

We have worked hard to earn the trust of the community. We have done this by wearing NOC t-shirts that let community members know we are in the neighborhood to serve the neighborhood. We smile often and talk to anyone who will engage with us. We have earned the acceptance and trust of the families we are serving.

We have watched the children in the learning center move from chaos to order. They are working hard and positive results are showing in the latest test scores. We are teaching them what it means to be good citizens. They are learning peaceful conflict resolution and why education matters.

The parents of the children have been engaged by offering cleaning services at the learning center each Thursday, bringing snacks to the tennis courts and community gatherings, and helping us to keep an eye on the children during playtime.

Our volunteers and teachers have been key in our success. Students from Hilton Head Prep High School come each day to help. During playtime they play games with the children, and during work time they offer assistance with homework, reading, and math practice. Our teachers from the public school have been hard working and consistent. They seem to experience much joy when they are working with the children in the learning center.

We have overcome challenges with the Cordillo Regime and we will continue to fight poverty and help all citizens in the community find the dream. Without your generosity none of this would be possible. Your support means so much to these families. The work we are doing together is important and will help to change the world.

The following letter recently appeared in the Island Packet:

Letter to the Editor: Save the Tutoring at Cordillo Courts

Our country has been made great by the idea that educating children gives us a better future.

If that education includes extra tutoring, even better. Those children will excel in the future.

People of Cordillo Courts apartments on Hilton Head Island who don’t want children born here to immigrants to have tutoring remind me of Caucasians who didn’t want black children to learn to read. Children are the future of the U.S., for all of us. Future engineers, doctors, lawyers, company managers all start as students.

Also, consider this point. Where are the parents of these children? They are cleaning your homes, cooking your meals, smoothing your golf courses, and taking care of your elderly parents. The very least we can do is tutor their children.

If children aren’t cared for after school, do you want those parents missing work? We are already losing workers here.

People opposing the tutoring program say they want to increase the value of their property. It increases in value when it’s used for education. Education is one of the highest values of America. Protect it and honor those who are providing it.

And unless they are Native Americans, their family once included hard-working immigrants and their children who got them where they are today.
