NOC Celebrates MLK Day

January 23, 2019 By NOC

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.MLK

         Martin Luther King, Jr.

On January 21, NOC celebrated the life of Dr Martin Luther King, reflecting on his legacy. It was a great honor and privilege for members of the NOC family to participate in Hilton Head Island’s MLK march. We respect and admire a great leader and champion of human rights, freedom, and social justice. Dr. King understood the power of love, compassion, and tolerance to create a just and fair society. He saw poverty and lack of opportunity as negative forces undermining human dignity, independence, and self-reliance.

Dr. King’s work is not complete yet. We must tackle the economic and social challenges that we continue to face today … to achieve the ‘Dream’ that Dr. King spoke about more than five decades ago.  Many people still live in poverty and lack opportunities to get ahead in life. The gulf between the haves and have-nots is widening locally and worldwide. There are conflicts and suffering in every corner of the world, including in own country, the United States.

NOC’s vision, mission, and outreach programs are in line with Dr. King’s teachings and actions, as we help those in need and those who are vulnerable. We continue this work, inspired by Dr. King and other great leaders throughout the world.

Naren Sharma, Founder & Chair, NOC

NOC Receives High Recognition

December 3, 2018 By NOC

After 10 years, NOC has officially earned GuideStar Platinum Level recognition. GuideStar, a national information service, reports on more than 2.7 million U.S. nonprofit organizations. According to Time Magazine, GuideStar is the country’s “premier nonprofit database.”

NOC believes in full transparency and this GuideStar certification attests to the integrity of our organization. Our vision has and will always be focused on establishing a level playing field within the community so all may enjoy a better quality of life.

To reach this Platinum milestone, NOC had to meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrate that we are an organization focused on measuring our progress and results;
  • Give potential funders information they seek;
  • Show improvement and results year over year
  • Provide a concrete alternative to donors evaluating NOC, using our overhead ratio

Now that the NOC has secured a Platinum Profile on GuideStar, we anticipate more exposure to foundation staff members, dozens of online giving portals, all major U.S.-based, donor-advised funds, some 9 million visitors to guidestar.org each year, and nearly 20 leading community foundations.

NOC Strengthening Partnership with Beaufort County School District, SC

October 22, 2018 By NOC

Sharma-Berg

On October 19, Dr. Herbert Berg, Interim Superintendent of BCSD, met with Dr. Narendra Sharma, NOC Founder & Chair, Corbin Stripling Director of Field Operations, and Daniel McKeown, Director of Development & Marketing,  to discuss NOC’s education program and  the significant achievement gap facing the BCSD. NOC presently serves more than 500 students through its 6 learning centers in Beaufort County. Its development approach and business model, using the public schools’ teachers and curriculum, as well as technology, is highly successful.

Dr. Berg also visited NOC’s learning centers at Parkview and Marsh Pointe in downtown Beaufort and met children engaged in enrichment activities. NOC is making significant progress in improving children’s learning skills in math, reading, and language arts. Dr Berg and NOC staff agreed to convene a meeting involving senior staff to define a joint action plan. Dr. Sharma noted that a strong public/private partnership and strong support by parents, businesses, and the community are needed to overcome this achievement gap.
