Fire Truck and Ambulance Popular with NOC Children

On June 21, when the children at the Oaks Apartments woke up, they were excited and looking forward to spending time with people from the Hilton Head Fire Department, who have the reputation for entertaining kids while teaching them about safety in riding bikes and crossing streets.

The day was delightful and the weather was fine, not too hot for about 30 kids to be outside having a good time on a special day. They had heard from their friends that the Fire Department is very generous, giving children gifts and colorful bicycle helmets.

The children were correct. Cinda Seaman and her team from the Hilton Head Fire Department were extra special. They told the kids about safety and gave them a tour of a fire truck and ambulance. The children found the tour exciting. They asked questions and were intrigued by all the equipment. Some of these children aspire to become firemen; others hold great admiration for this important profession. Children received gifts, including helmets, which made them look like aliens from an unknown planet.

This event was highly successful. As in the past, the Hilton Head Fire Fighter’s Association has given a small grant to NOC to support its Neighborhood Soccer League, which is popular among children and parents in low-income neighborhoods.

Spring-Summer Soccer Begins at Oaks

After persistent badgering by NOC students to get soccer off the ground, NOC launched its 2013 soccer season with its first clinic at Oaks. NOC, with support from the Hilton Head Firefighters Association, will sponsor soccer in Hilton Head Island, as well as Bluffton.

Soccer is a powerful connector: it brings people together in a spirited way and communities together in a competitive way, while cutting across racial and economic barriers.

Nelson Mandela said “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair…. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination.” Mandela used soccer as a way to unite his people against a rising tide of division and chaos.

NOC uses soccer as a way to connect students and parents to the NOC education program. NOC’s Neighborhood Soccer League, which started three years ago with support from the Fire Fighters Association, had more than 75 children registered for the program in 2012. Many of these young people, already outstanding soccer players with excellent skills, are eager to get the new season going.

NOC Students Celebrate in HHI and Bluffton

week, they knew that this was a special occasion. They came to celebrate their successful completion of NOC’s after school academic year that focused on mastering skills in math and language arts. The children worked diligently throughout the year and they looked forward to receiving a certificate recognizing their accomplishments.

The mood at both Centers was festive. The children were excited, teachers and volunteers were happy, and parents were proud of the children’s achievements. The children worked diligently throughout the year, sometimes even giving up snacks and play time with other children as they came faithfully to NOC’s Program Centers to complete their homework and participate in internet-based learning to enhance their academic skills.

Ordinarily, children look forward to a break from studies after completing a year-long program. But many NOC children actually seemed disappointed that there would be no classes until the summer session starts on June 10. The children are already looking forward to the Summer Virtual Learning Program that NOC will provide in partnership with the Beaufort County School District.

NOC is proud of these children and happy to be part of their lives as they grow and develop. NOC is making a difference in the lives of children living in low-income neighborhoods where opportunities are limited.

NOC Health Screening Reaches Many People

h2 Health screenings in Hilton Head and Bluffton served more than 130 people, both adults and children, during two events in May 2013. Many different organizations joined with NOC to make the screenings a big success.

 

  1. Beaufort Memorial Medical Bus provided two nurses who checked blood pressure, glucose levels, and PSA (prostate test).
  2. Ryan White Foundation conducted and processed free HIV tests and provided related information.
  3. Ronald McDonald Care Bus provided two technicians who did dental check-ups for children and gave out free toothbrushes.
  4. Volunteers In Medicine (VIM) send a representative who informed participants about the many services at VIM, with special emphasis on breast exams and mammograms. She also distributed pamphlets containing valuable health information.
  5. Select Health sent a representative who provided information about their organization and services. She distributed information about health and healthy living, prevention of child obesity, care of underweight babies.
  6. Pasos distributed free vitamins to women, information about classes and services they provide, and different pamphlets and information about healthy living and medical care.

In addition, two members of NOC’s Health Committee – Dan Clauer and Judy Tauscher – conducted Body Mass Indexing (BMI), weighing and measuring participants and giving them information about healthy weight. They also provided participants information about NOC’s Aerobics classes, conducted by Flor Mora, as a good way to achieve a healthy weight.

NOC has many stories to share from its community health outreach programs. One participant in this year’s program was Lorenzo, who came to have his glucose level and blood pressure checked (both were fine). Lorenzo first came to an NOC health screening two years ago, at which time he had the PSA test. When he received the test results by mail, he was advised to see a doctor immediately. He is now on medication and doing very well. Lorenzo is grateful to NOC for providing the free screening right in his local neighborhood. He had the test done only because it was free and convenient.

NOC is making a difference in people’s lives by bringing services and service providers right into the communities where the need is greatest. But these outreach programs are possible only because of the dedication and gift of time from volunteers and members of NOC’s Health Committee. New NOC Board Appointment

bscWith more than 15 years experience advising clients on business immigration and labor and employment law issues, Melissa Azallion represents clients in multiple industries including manufacturing, technology, health care, quick service/food service, hospitality, government and education. In addition to serving as legal counsel for clients over the past fifteen years, Ms. Azallion has worked as a Human Resources Administrator and Affirmative Action Director for the University of Dayton, where she was responsible for writing and directing the University’s Affirmative Action Plan. Ms. Azallion joined the McNair Law Firm in 2012 as a shareholder and heads the immigration practice for the Firm. Ms. Azallion is licensed in South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, and the Federal District Court.

Ms. Azallion frequently speaks to community and business organizations on immigration and employment topics. She is active in numerous professional organizations: Board of Directors of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce; member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Board of Directors and Past Chair of Memory Matters; Lowcountry Workforce Investment Board; and Immigration Chair, South Carolina Bar Association, Labor and Employment Committee.
